One at a Time: "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" (1963) by Bob Dylan

#97 "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" (1963) by Bob Dylan

I think that it's sort of funny that I've had so many different number 1s already. I guess it's still pretty early on, but I got one of my favorite Bruce albums right away, and now one of my favorite Dylan albums right away.

52 in 52: Week 12 - "Her Majesty, the Decemberists"

Week of 12/28/14 - 1/3/15

Album from 2003

Since I've already passed most of their albums, and I'm sitting here waiting for their newest to come in the mail today, I bought "Her Majesty the Decemberists" by the Decemberists from 2003 and decided to write about it. It's probably the Decemberist album I'm least familiar with, which I think works perfectly. I don't already know the songs too well to the point where I'm biased by how well they've stuck in my head, but I've heard them at least once before, and I know the artists well enough to still write about the music.

Also, apparently "Welcome Interstate Managers" by Fountains of Wayne has never been released on anything but CD.

One at a Time: "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" (1974) by Richard and Linda Thompson

#479 "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" (1974) by Richard and Linda Thompson

I had never heard "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" before I listened to it for this.

It's pretty much right up my alley, though. This type of stripped-down folk is one of my go-to genres, and I'm also a big fan of mixing a male and female voice, which "I Want to See The Bright Lights Tonight" does excellently throughout its track listing.

One at a Time: "Number One Record" (1972) by Big Star

#439 "Number One Record" (1972) by Big Star

Even though I'm pretty sure that they're not going to end up that close on this list, it's hard for me to figure out in my mind which Big Star album is the best one. It might be because I blend them a little bit in my head because the CD that I've always had was some re-issue that had both "Number One Record" and "Radio City" on it together.

52 in 52: Week 11 - "A Ghost is Born"

Week of 12/21/14 - 12/27/14

Album from 2004

What I didn't exactly realize when I started this was exactly how hard it was actually going to be to go out to a store and figure out when each album was released and which one I wanted to buy and if I could write about it. What I've been doing is writing down a short list for each year and then figuring it out when I get to the store. It's also a little weird because it seems like there was a time after vinyl was "useful" and before it was "retro," and so there are plenty of things, like albums from 2004, and I'm sure this will be a bigger problem in the late '90s, that never got released on vinyl, and if they did, they are somewhat rare and pretty expensive.
