One at a Time: "Green River" (1969) by Creedence Clearwater Revival

#95 "Green River"(1969) by Creedence Clearwater Revival

I've never known much about CCR. I like their hits, but somehow their full catalog has escaped me. "Green River" is much more present and alive than the other boring, classic-rock hits that my brain tends to lump CCR in with. The guitar is alive, and there is no distance in the way that I expected.

The album's two big hits, "Green River" and "Bad Moon Rising," along with "Tombstone Shadow", "Lodi", and "Wrote a Song for Everyone", specifically, are prescient and clear-sighted songs, even with John Fogerty's drawn-out growling and grumbling. Even when you can't quite understand what he's saying, it's not off-putting in the way that I often find incomprehensible lyrics to be.

A couple of days ago I wrote about Houndmouth and their first two albums, the second of which came out today (!), and I was talking about bands that are the encapsulation of Americana, bands with equal parts rock and country, without being too far in either direction, that are a collaboration but still sound like one voice. Being ignorant as I am, I overlooked CCR in this mention, but "Green River" makes me rethink that oversight. The cohesiveness on display here makes me want to listen to more CCR, and that's as high a compliment as I can pay.
